Senator Vancellus: What happened to Lucius?
Varius Castus: I cannot say. As we exchanged farewells he told me to forget all details of the elektron millwheel if I wished to have a long and prosperous life. I have not seen him since.
Senator Vancellus: Do you really mean to say that Favella was transformed into a goddess who then cast down lightning and set Rome burning?
Varius Castus: I have related only what I saw, Senator.
Senator Marcus: The principle of the elektron wheel seems simple enough. Would you say that if such a device were to be built today, anyone might gain the powers that Favella commanded?
Varius Castus: I cannot say. I do not have the learning and understanding of Kylos or Lucius.
Senator Vancellus: Lucius intrigues me, Varius. Kylos was clever, Iâll grant you that, but Lucius was something more. Can you name the nine Muses?
Varius Castus: Calliope, Clio, Euterpe, Terpsichoreâ
Senator Vancellus: Enough. Can you name the muse who inspires blacksmiths, masons and shipwrights?
Varius Castus: There is no such muse, Senator.
Senator Vancellus: No? Some say that Vulcan is the tenth muse. He is said to have whispered to the great artificers, like those who built the first crossbow, aqueduct and cascade mill. Might the limping blacksmith Lucius have been Vulcan, walking among mortals?
Varius Castus: I am no priest, I know only ships and masonry.
Senator Marcus: No matter. Tomorrow you will commence work on diagrams, Varius Castus, diagrams detailing everything you can remember of the elektron mill. Emperor Titus is interested, do not disappoint him.
Senator Pompeius: And remember, your ship is being held across the bay in Napoli, and we know which deckhand is your young son.
Senator Vancellus: Gentlemen, is this wise?
Senator Pompeius: You have concerns, Vancellus?
Senator Vancellus: I do. The gods may dislike the prospect of mortals reaching out for their powers. Vulcan himself may have stopped Alto and Kylos. He may stop us.
Senator Pompeius: Let him try.
Senator Vancellus: Do not blaspheme, Pompeius. Remember, today is Vulcanalla, sacred to Vulcan, and there is a very large volcano close by.
Senator Marcus: Gentlemen, gentlemen, should we not leave such decisions to the emperor? Scribe, declare this hearing concluded on the day of Vulcanalla, in the first year of the reign of Emperor Titus.
